Wrexham looking to ‘raid Leeds’ for another player as chances of signing Patrick Bamford revealed

Wrexham have been linked with a move for Leeds United forward Patrick Bamford this week.

Wrexham will make signings in the January transfer window, with their main focus seemingly on improving their front line.

Paul Mullin isn’t scoring enough goals for the Red Dragons this season and with Ollie Palmer having not been a prolific striker for several years, it makes sense to bring in another number nine this winter.

Wrexham were linked with Patrick Bamford earlier this week amid the Englishman falling somewhat out of favour under Daniel Farke.

Bamford has previously proven himself at a much higher level, excelling in the Championship and Premier League with Middlesbrough and Leeds.

However, the Red Dragons’ chances of signing the forward in the winter are seemingly pretty low.

Wrexham interested in Joe Gelhardt

The Wrexham Insider spoke exclusively to transfer expert Graeme Bailey this week to get the lowdown on the club’s January plans.

And while Bailey questioned the likelihood of Wrexham being able to afford Bamford, he did reveal the Welsh powerhouse could ‘raid Leeds’ for another forward in Joe Gelhardt.

He said: “Patrick Bamford is an interesting name, but from what I am told Leeds are not in a huge hurry to lose anyone this January, it is all about promotion for them.

“And whilst Wrexham have a big budget, I don’t see how they could afford Bamford who is still on a Premier League contract. I do expect Wrexham to do something and I am actually told they could raid Leeds for another player, as they like Joe Gelhardt, although they are not alone and it would not easy to land him either.

“But I understand Wrexham have been offered a host of names and are confident of getting the right man.”

As per Capology, Bamford is currently earning £70,000-a-week, while Gelhardt is taking home £15,000-a-week – a much more affordable fee for a club in League One.

What Wrexham fans need to know about Joe Gelhardt

Gelhardt began his career with Wigan Athletic and after making his senior debut in 2019, was snapped up by Leeds a year later.

He went on to play 31 times for the Whites’ U21 team, scoring 20 and assisting six in said matches.

The 22-year-old made his Premier League debut in October 2021 under Marcelo Bielsa and has now played 57 times for Leeds’ first-team.

However, his goalscoring record is not great, with just three goals and five assists provided in 57 matches.

But with a lot of those outings coming off the bench, he could still thrive if given a more prominent role in the third tier.
